Hello, Neighbors!

It has been a while since we issued a newsletter or held a general meeting, but the Board of Directors has been busy dealing with items that have had an affect on the LHR area:

We helped support Mayfair residents in their successful efforts to keep CVS Pharmacy from selling liquor.

We are supporting East Pasadena Improving Community Group which is trying to improve East Colorado Blvd.  This is a community group that is fighting to deal with many of the problems that exist on East Colorado Blvd. such as sex crimes, drugs and prostitution. They are also dealing with the  problem of a very high concentration of sex offenders that are financed by the California State Parole and approved by the county which has encouraged more sex related businesses in the area. See their Web page for further information : http://www.eastpasadena.org/)

We have also begun a campaign to re-establish our Neighborhood Watch programs throughout the LHR area. Gil Galvan has volunteered to head this project. With the poor economy and with Christmas just around the corner we must be especially vigilant. PLEASE report any suspicious activity.  Their has been a rash of criminal activity in the area. On Hampton we have had one house burglarized during the day and an attempted home burglary on Newhaven. Pasadena has noticed an increase in garage and car break-ins. There has also been a rash of thefts of delivery items left on porches. If you see any unusual activity around the area, please, report it to the police.

We are also dealing with the problem of mansionization that is taking place in LHR. An example is the remolded house at 695 Cliff Drive. This house meets all building codes but it is a very intrusive structure and does not fit in with the neighborhood. The City’s Planning Division is going to review the City’s zoning code standards that regulate the bulk and mass of single-family residences in the City. The goal is to make sure remolding and new construction is compatible with existing development. There will be a  community workshops held in 2009 and 2010 to get residents’ input on what type of development should be allowed in a residential area and we hope the LHR overlay will be updated.

Jason  Mikaelian, Senior Planner, with  the City’s Planning Department will be leading the workshops and at our general meeting, he will give us an overview of the process which will take place. He will also answer any questions we might have.

If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.
